Topic # 8: Scheduling
We have 2 full time laborists that cover Mon. through Thursday. Friday days are covered by a 'part time' laborist who works usually 4-5 (12) hour shifts per month. Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays are covered by local ob/gyns. We have approx. 19 local private ob's who participate. Each private OB usually gets 1-2 shifts/month. Shift compensation for the part timers $2k/12 hour and $4k/24 hour.

Question: How is 1/2 time program working out?
The short answer to the 1/2 time program is that it doesn't work well. I
think I'm close to getting permission to recruit the remaining 2 FTE's and
move the program to 24 x 7. The two biggest issues are 1) problems with
hand-off when hospitalist goes off shift and care transfers to one of the
private OB/Gyn's and 2) a rationale for the hospitalist is to have a "big
picture" view of how L&D is runninng. When they're only there part time I
can't really develop that aspect.

I'm curious as to how programs determine their schedules, specifically:
1)How many FTEs in your program? What is considered FT?
2)How many doctors on your team (# of FT and #s of PT)?
3)Are schedules done 1,3, 6 mos in advance?
3) Any Guidelines for:
A. Weekends
B. Vacation
C. Holidays--Major and Minor Holidays--which ones divided? According to FTE or only major Holidays equally? What about 3 day weekends (4 if you include Friday night)
4)Any other tips for successful scheduling?

I'm curious as to how programs determine their schedules, specifically:
1)How many FTEs in your program? What is considered FT? 4
2)How many doctors on your team (# of FT and #s of PT)? 4 FT by choice, had 4FT, 1PT but 1FT left, the PT picked up additional days by choice in order for everyone to get the hours they wanted.
3)Are schedules done 1,3, 6 mos in advance? 2-3
3) Any Guidelines for:

C. Holidays--Major and Minor Holidays--which ones divided? According to FTE or only major Holidays equally? What about 3 day weekends (4 if you include Friday night) We just started, haven¹t really gotten into holiday scheduling as yet.
4)Any other tips for successful scheduling? We¹ll be interested in results of this discussion.
