Subject: Deliveries for private doctors
Do you charge private doctors for doing their deliveries?

This is a problem for us. In general we do not charge. If the doctor has made an attempt to come but is simply late, we do the delivery as a courtesy. However, if that doctor is tied up at a different hospital, or in surgery, then we do charge. Currently, we are charging the full vaginal delivery fee but that is unpopular with the private obstetricians. I would be very interested in what other hospitalists are doing.

We are similar; however, we only charge $350 for a vaginal delivery when it is not a courtesy. This allows the private obstetrician to at least collect part of their fee. We do not have a contract with each doctor. But we are wondering whether we should have a formal written contract. What are other hospitalists doing?
